Product Information
Why is it called Lilypad?
Lilypads are nature’s masters of balance—they rest on water yet stay dry on top. That harmony between moisture and beauty inspired the name Lilypad. Much like its namesake, Lilypad Paint and Primer keeps your home beautiful while helping balance moisture and humidity.
Why should I choose Lilypad Paint and Primer?
Lilypad actively helps manage indoor moisture and stabilize humidity, while providing a premium finish. Powered by our patented Vaporwisp™ technology and backed by lab research and pilot studies in real buildings, Lilypad combines moisture storage with directional vapor transport capabilities to control moisture and help improve indoor air quality. Lilypad is also GreenWise™ Certified, independently tested and verified to meet strict environmental and performance standards. To learn more about the science behind Lilypad, please visit “Our Technology”.
What benefits can I expect in my home?
Durability: Lilypad helps reduce condensation and humidity swings that can cause staining, peeling paint, rot, and long-term material damage.
Indoor Air Quality: Lilypad helps reduce the humid conditions that support mold growth and musty odors, contributing to improved indoor air for occupants.
Comfort: Lilypad balances humidity levels to make living spaces feel more comfortable.
Efficiency: By passively regulating humidity and temperature, Lilypad can ease the load on your HVAC system and support energy savings.
How do I know it’s working?
You should see and feel a noticeable difference in your home’s environment. Here are a few simple ways to experience the Vaporwisp™ technology in action:
- Dry-touch walls: Surfaces that once collected condensation will now remain dry to the touch.
- Vanishing moisture test: To see Lilypad pull excess moisture from a room, wipe the wall with a damp cloth and watch as the moisture quickly vanishes into the paint layer. (Note: This works best when Lilypad is dry, as there is a limit to how much moisture the paint can absorb.)
- The cooling effect as Lilypad resets: After a shower or period of high humidity, touch the wall. You can feel a distinct coolness as the paint “resets,” slowly releasing the moisture it absorbed back into the air. This effect is most noticeable as the humidity in the room quickly returns to normal levels.
- Long-term freshness: Over time, you should notice fewer musty odors, cleaner surfaces, and a reduction in the humidity spikes that typically cause moisture damage.
Lilypad temporarily stores moisture within a nanoscopic component of the paint and releases it back into the air as humidity falls. Under normal conditions, the surface remains completely dry to the touch.
How long does Lilypad last?
With proper surface preparation and application, Lilypad’s finish can maintain its integrity for 7 to 10 years, which is consistent with high-quality interior paints. Lilypad is formulated for excellent washability and scrub resistance, ensuring it stands up to wear and tear, even in high-traffic areas.
Lilypad's moisture-regulating technology remains active as long as the paint is on your wall. Each time the paint absorbs water vapor, it “resets” by releasing it without significant performance loss. Repainting with Lilypad builds additional moisture-control capacity over time.
Do I need to use both the Paint and Primer?
Yes. Lilypad’s Paint and Primer are designed to work as a system.
The Primer layer plays a crucial role in directing moisture away from walls and ceilings and ensuring the Vaporwisp™ technology performs as intended. Using both products together provides the strongest and most reliable moisture-control performance.
How much paint do I need to order?
One gallon of Primer covers about 400 sq ft, and one gallon of Paint covers about 250 sq ft per generous coat. We recommend one coat of Primer and at least two generous coats of Paint. You can use our coverage calculator to estimate your needs.
What colors are offered?
Currently, Lilypad is available in Perfect White, a clean, balanced white with subtle undertones that adapts beautifully to both natural and artificial light. It was refined to complement a wide range of palettes and materials, from warm woods and stone to contemporary metals and minimalist interiors.
What finishes / sheens do you offer?
Lilypad is currently available in two interior finishes:
- Matte: A soft, non-reflective finish that’s both timeless and on-trend—perfect for achieving that clean, “art gallery” look. Matte hides surface imperfections beautifully and provides the strongest moisture control performance of our finishes. It’s ideal for low-traffic walls and ceilings.
- Eggshell: A finish with a subtle sheen that’s easy to clean and perfect for high-traffic areas that need extra durability. It’s also a great choice for trim, doors, and other surfaces prone to fingerprints or scuffs.
Both finishes are formulated to deliver Lilypad’s unique moisture-control benefits while keeping your home looking beautiful.
Can I order Primer or Paint individually?
Yes. Add individual gallon cans of Lilypad Paint and/or Primer to your shopping cart to get what you need for your project. Just remember that Lilypad Paint and Primer are designed to work together as a system, and using both together ensures the best moisture control performance. We recommend purchasing our Paint & Primer Kit if you’re just getting started.
What surfaces can I use Lilypad on?
Lilypad is suitable for most interior surfaces, including:
- Previously painted surfaces (water-based paints only)
- Drywall
- Plaster
- Wood (e.g., doors, cabinets, trim)
- Concrete
Just remember to prep your surfaces properly!
Will I need to re-apply Primer when I eventually refresh my walls?
No. One coat of primer is all you need. Vaporwisp™ technology will keep working no matter how many coats of Lilypad Paint you apply over top.
Do you sell exterior paint as well?
Not yet. Lilypad is currently formulated for indoor use only. We are working on exterior formulations and will update our website when they are available.
Application
I just got my Lilypad Paint and Primer—what now?
Congrats! You're one step closer to making your walls work for you.
Lilypad applies as easily as other premium paints, but the Paint and Primer are designed to work as a system. To ensure the Vaporwisp™ technology performs at its peak, apply one coat of Lilypad Primer followed by at least two generous coats of Lilypad Paint.
For a professional finish, just follow these four steps, which are detailed below:
- Step 1: Gather your supplies.
- Step 2: Prepare your surfaces (this is the most important step!) Please make sure to address and repair any underlying moisture or mold issues before applying Lilypad.
- Step 3: Apply Lilypad Primer.
- Step 4: Apply Lilypad Paint.
What supplies should I gather to apply Lilypad?
A quality paint job requires the right equipment. These are the essential tools you’ll need:
Surface preparation supplies
- Cleaning tools: A sponge or microfiber cloth, a bucket, and mild soapy water. Extra clean, damp cloths are handy for wiping away soap residue, dust, and paint drips.
- Repair materials: Patching compound and a putty knife to fix any holes or cracks.
- Sanding materials: Fine-grit sandpaper to obtain a flat, smooth surface over patched areas and to provide "grip" on previously painted or glossy surfaces.
- Painter’s tape: Protect your trim, ceilings, and adjacent surfaces.
- Drop cloths: Cover all floors and furniture to prevent accidental drips.
Application tools
- Brushes: A high-quality synthetic brush for detail work and “cutting in” to corners.
- Rollers: A paint roller and a high quality paint roller cover with a 3/8" to 1/2" nap for smooth or lightly textured surfaces.
- Paint tray and liners: Essential for holding paint and making cleanup faster.
- Stir sticks to ensure even pigment and consistency before application (included in your Lilypad shipment!).
- Can opening/closing: Use a paint can opener or flathead screwdriver to gently pry the lid upward. Have a rubber mallet or a hammer and scrap wood ready to reseal the lid flush after use.
How should I prepare surfaces before applying Lilypad?
Proper preparation is the most important step for long-term durability. Paint will only adhere properly if the surface is stable, clean, and dry.
- Address underlying issues: Fix any active plumbing leaks, roof leaks, or structural moisture problems first. If mold is present, it must be professionally remediated; Lilypad is designed to help prevent the humid and damp conditions that can lead to mold growth. Lilypad does not kill existing mold.
- Clean: Wash the walls with mild soapy water and a sponge or microfiber cloth to remove dust, dirt, grease, or wax. After washing, wipe the surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
- Repair: Patch any holes or cracks and allow the patching compound to dry fully.
- Sand: Lightly sand previously painted surfaces—especially glossy finishes—to provide "grip" for the new paint. Wipe away all sanding dust with a damp cloth. WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. Lilypad does not contain lead, but some older paints may. Lead is toxic. Exposure to lead dust can cause serious illness, such as brain damage, especially in children. Pregnant women should also avoid exposure. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD or visiting www.epa.gov/lead.
- Dry: Ensure the surface is completely dry to the touch before moving to priming.
How should I apply Lilypad Primer?
The Primer layer creates the essential foundation for Lilypad’s moisture-control technology. It helps protect your walls from moisture intrusion and enables the Paint to function most effectively.
- Stir well: Primer components can separate over time. Thoroughly mix with a stir stick before use to achieve an even consistency, and stir occasionally during use.
- Start with the ceiling: Follow professional methods by starting with the ceiling first, then moving to the walls to catch any drips as you go.
- "Cut in" the edges: Use a high-quality brush to paint along the edges, corners, and trim where a roller cannot reach. Completing these areas first helps to achieve a clean, seamless finish.
- Fill in with the roller: Once the edges are cut in, use a roller with a 3/8" to 1/2" nap to fill in the large, wide spaces. Apply one even coat across the entire surface.
- Cure overnight: For the best moisture-control performance, allow the Primer to cure overnight before applying your first coat of Paint.
How should I apply Lilypad Paint?
Now that your primer has cured, you are ready to apply the functional topcoat. Lilypad Paint (Matte or Eggshell) is the layer of the system that manages humidity through its "sponge-like" action. Follow these steps for the best results:
- Stir well: Before you begin, use a stir stick to mix the paint well to ensure even pigment and consistency. Continue to stir occasionally during your project.
- Start with the ceiling: Follow professional methods by starting with the ceiling first, then moving to the walls to catch any drips as you go.
- "Cut in" the edges: Use a high-quality brush to paint along the edges, corners, and trim where a roller cannot reach. Completing these detailed areas first creates a seamless border for your roller work.
- Fill in with the roller: Once the edges are cut in, use a roller with a 3/8" to 1/2" nap to fill in the large, wide spaces. Apply one even coat across the entire surface.
- Apply at least two generous coats: For the Vaporwisp™ technology to perform at its peak, apply at least two generous coats. If you have extra paint, use it! An additional coat will further enhance Lilypad’s moisture-storage capabilities.
- Allow proper drying time: Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next. We recommend waiting at least one hour between applications.
What is a “generous coat” & other painting terms for beginners?
Generous Coat: This means applying paint on the heavy side rather than stretching a single roller-load too far. Because the amount of paint left on the wall depends on your unique technique, the goal is to avoid applying it too thin.
Tip: Reload your roller frequently—as soon as you see the coverage thinning, it’s time for more paint.
Nap: This refers to the thickness of the fibers on your roller cover. A 3/8" to 1/2" nap is recommended because it is designed to hold the "generous" amount of paint required for the Lilypad system to function best.
Cutting in: Using a brush to paint areas too tight for a roller, such as corners, along baseboards, or where the wall meets the ceiling.
Cure: While paint may feel dry quickly, "curing" is the time it takes to reach its maximum hardness and performance. This is why we recommend letting Lilypad Primer cure overnight.
Sheen / Finish: This describes how light reflects off the surface. Lilypad offers Matte (non-reflective, hides imperfections) and Eggshell (subtle sheen, highly durable for high-traffic areas).
How do I open and close the lid of a paint can?
To open: Use a paint can opener or a flathead screwdriver. Gently pry the lid upward, moving your tool around the entire circumference of the rim to lift it evenly. Avoid prying too hard in one spot, as this can bend the lid and compromise the future seal.
To close: Place the lid back on the can and ensure it is sealed evenly. Use a rubber mallet to tap lightly around the edges until the lid is flush with the rim. If you don't have a mallet, place a scrap piece of wood over the lid and tap with a hammer to distribute the pressure evenly and prevent denting.
On what surfaces can I apply Lilypad?
Lilypad is designed for indoor use only. It is suitable for a wide variety of interior surfaces, including:
- Drywall and plaster: Ideal for standard interior walls and ceilings.
- Previously painted surfaces: Can be applied over most existing water-based (latex) paints.
- Wood: Suitable for trim, doors, and cabinets.
- Concrete: Can be used on interior concrete surfaces.
Surfaces to avoid
- Exterior Surfaces: Lilypad is formulated for indoor use only.
- Wallpaper: Do not apply Lilypad over wallpaper. Wallpaper must be fully removed and the surface properly prepped to ensure good adhesion and moisture control.
- Oil-based paints: Oil and water don’t mix. So Lilypad, like other water-based paints, does not adhere well to oil-based coatings. If your walls are painted with an oil-based paint, first apply a bonding or oil-to-latex conversion primer, then apply Lilypad Primer, and finish with Lilypad Paint.
Can I apply another paint over Lilypad?
Lilypad’s Vaporwisp™ technology must interact directly with room air. Applying another paint on top blocks this interaction and can significantly reduce or negate the beneficial moisture‑control performance you’ve invested in. Lilypad should always be the final topcoat.
That said, having Lilypad underneath a conventional paint does not create a moisture risk.
Can I use a sprayer?
We are working on Lilypad formulations that are optimized for spray application and will update our website (including this FAQ section) when they are available.
Can I thin Lilypad?
Lilypad is a water-based coating and is meant to be applied in thicker coats. In most cases, thinning isn’t needed. If you do choose to thin it, use water only. Start by adding up to two tablespoons of water to a full gallon and mix well.
Health & Safety
What is in Lilypad Paint?
Lilypad is formulated with the same essential ingredients found in other high-quality, water-based paints: a durable binder, high-grade pigments, and specialized additives.
What sets Lilypad apart is its proprietary moisture-control technology. The Vaporwisp™ system uses a high-purity additive that acts as a natural desiccant. This inert, medical-grade material is commonly used in pharmaceutical and food applications.
Our approach to ingredient selection is informed by our commitment to health, safety, and environmental responsibility.
Is Lilypad safe for use in homes with children or pets?
Yes. Lilypad was specifically formulated for the most sensitive occupants of your home. It is a water-based, low-odor paint that meets all environmental and safety regulations across the United States.
What is GreenWise Certification?
GreenWise™ Certified indicates that Lilypad meets defined criteria for reduced VOC content and restricted chemical use, as evaluated through third-party testing by Coatings Research Group, Inc. (CRGI). The certification reflects a formulation approach intended to support indoor air quality while also verifying that the paint performs in line with established professional standards for durability, washability, and coverage.
What are VOCs and how does Lilypad compare?
VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature. These compounds are commonly found in traditional paints and coatings and can contribute to poor indoor air quality and various health concerns.
Lilypad is formulated to meet the most stringent VOC limits in the United States, including those set by California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). Lower VOC levels can mean cleaner indoor air, fewer odors during and after painting, and a safer environment for people, pets, and sensitive spaces.
Disposal & Storage
How do I dispose of extra paint?
If you have extra paint, use it! An additional coat will enhance Lilypad’s performance and amplify its benefits.
Check whether your state participates in PaintCare for recycling options and drop off locations.
Check with your local municipality for disposal guidelines. Small quantities of dried paint can usually be disposed of with regular household trash. Never pour liquid paint down drains or into the environment.
What is PaintCare, and does Lilypad cover the fee?
PaintCare is a non-profit that runs paint stewardship programs in states that have passed paint recycling laws. These programs ensure leftover paint is collected, transported, and recycled responsibly. Currently, paint recycling laws apply to the District of Columbia and 11 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and New Jersey.
While most retailers add a small "PaintCare Recovery Fee" to every can of paint sold in these states, Lilypad covers this fee for our customers. We believe in responsible recycling and choose to absorb this cost to support a sustainable product lifecycle.
To learn more or find a drop-off site near you, visit the PaintCare website or use their Site Locator.
How do I store my leftover paint?
Keep leftover Lilypad Paint in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the lid sealed tightly. For extra protection, you can place a layer of plastic wrap over the paint before sealing the lid over top. Proper storage helps maintain performance for future touch-ups or additional coats.
What is the shelf life of Lilypad Paint?
Unopened cans of Lilypad Paint are formulated to maintain their high quality for up to two years from the date of purchase, provided they are stored in a cool, dry place and protected from freezing temperatures. Once a can has been opened, we recommend using the remaining paint within one year to ensure optimal performance and finish.
Our Technology
How does Lilypad Paint and Primer work?
Lilypad uses Vaporwisp™ technology, a two-layer system that actively manages indoor moisture. The Primer acts as a gate, opening to release water vapor when humidity is high and closing when it’s low. The Paint acts like a sponge, absorbing excess moisture and slowly releasing it back into the air. This process helps regulate humidity and temperature, protecting your walls and ceilings while keeping indoor conditions more stable.
Does Lilypad Paint control mold growth?
Lilypad does not directly eliminate mold growth. Lilypad helps manage indoor moisture. Moisture can enable mold growth and rot potentially leading to health problems and structural damage to building materials. In helping manage moisture, Lilypad can help reduce conditions that encourage mold growth and help support an improved indoor environment.
Will Lilypad Paint kill mold on my walls?
Lilypad is designed to help manage indoor moisture, not to treat existing mold. For areas with existing mold or moisture damage, experts recommend professional remediation. Lilypad should be applied only to clean, dry surfaces after existing mold has been treated.
Is Vaporwisp™ technology patented?
Yes. The Vaporwisp™ technology that gives Lilypad its unique abilities for managing indoor moisture and supporting improved, more durable walls, is patented in the United States and other countries.
How is Lilypad different from other bathroom paints?
Unlike standard bathroom paints that rely on extra biocides or glossy finishes, Lilypad actively manages moisture in your space. It absorbs and releases water vapor to help regulate indoor humidity, reducing condensation and keeping walls drier. You don’t have to compromise on style—Lilypad delivers this protection in a beautiful matte finish, so your bathroom stays protected and visually stunning.
What sets Lilypad apart is its proprietary moisture-control technology. The Vaporwisp™ system uses a high-purity additive that acts as a natural desiccant. This inert, medical-grade material is commonly used in pharmaceutical and food applications. We carefully select each component for performance, environmental responsibility, and safety.
How does Lilypad work in a bathroom with lots of tile on the walls?
Tiles are ideal for areas with direct water exposure, such as showers and tubs. However, steam from showers rises and spreads throughout the bathroom, often leading to condensation on ceilings and in corners. If your bathroom has limited paintable wall space, the ceiling is an excellent place to use Lilypad. Because water vapor rises, the ceiling is the most important surface to protect. By helping control indoor humidity, Lilypad can also reduce condensation on other surfaces in the bathroom, including tiles, grout, and corners.
What is inside the paint that controls moisture?
Lilypad contains a material similar to the silica gel packets often found in vitamin bottles or dried fruit packaging. Just as those packets absorb water to help keep them dry and protected, Lilypad’s technology helps manage indoor humidity to support more durable and comfortable living spaces.
Will Lilypad draw water into my walls?
No. Lilypad is designed to keep water out of your walls. Lilypad Paint is the first line of defense, absorbing water vapor from the air before it can penetrate the wall. Lilypad Primer provides a second line of defense, further resisting water entry and steering water vapor away from your walls as Lilypad Paint releases stored moisture through evaporation.
Will Lilypad trap water inside my walls?
No. Lilypad is designed to let moisture inside your walls escape. Lilypad Primer is highly permeable when the humidity in the wall is high, and Lilypad Paint channels excess moisture into the room, where it can safely dissipate.
While Lilypad prevents vapor from becoming trapped, it is not a substitute for structural repairs. Any leaks from roofs, plumbing, or windows should still be fixed to protect your home.
Will my walls feel damp since the paint stores humidity?
No — your walls will not feel wet. Lilypad’s technology temporarily stores moisture in a microscopic layer within the paint and releases it as the air dries. The surface stays dry to the touch.
Where does the stored water go?
The water vapor that Lilypad absorbs is stored in the Paint itself at a microscopic level, and is naturally released back into the air once indoor humidity drops. The Paint simply helps balance moisture — it doesn’t trap water permanently.
Can Lilypad be used in very humid climates?
Yes! Lilypad can be used in humid climates. It’s designed to manage changes in humidity—like those that occur after showers, cooking, or daily temperature shifts. Even in consistently humid environments, there are still natural rises and falls in humidity throughout the day, and that’s when Lilypad does its best work.
Does Lilypad’s performance change over time?
Lilypad is engineered for long-term performance. It continuously absorbs and releases water vapor with minimal aging or hysteresis, maintaining its effectiveness over years of use.
How much energy does Lilypad store and release?
Lilypad absorbs heat energy as stored moisture evaporates and turns into water vapor. This creates a powerful cooling effect because 2,200 joules of energy are absorbed for every gram of moisture that evaporates. One gallon of Lilypad Paint can store up to about 370 grams of water—so about 800,000 joules of heat energy is absorbed as that water evaporates. That’s equivalent to the amount of energy in roughly 80 AA batteries or 16 iPhone 17 batteries. You can see Lilypad’s cooling effect in action and learn more on Our Technology page.
